College students want to make the most out of their 4 years. Whether that be working part time, joining every club on campus, or having a great social group, your years at undergrad should be spent wisely. So what’s the most important thing to add to that busy schedule of yours?
Working at an internship is an essential buffer to your future career. Many college students believe if an internship is non-credit or unpaid, it’s not worth their time. FALSE! Any internship that is willing to educate you in aspects of your major and soon to be career is worth having.
Having internships in college shows your drive to acquire and improve skills to upcoming employers. Sure, classes will teach you the basics, but internships give you experience to the the career world in real time.
Thinking about applying for an internships? Still unsure if you should? Here are the top 5 reasons you should be filling out applications now:
College students are always finding ways to make their resumes look 10x better. Having an internship section on your resume shows employers that you put yourself out there and gained experience.
Being that you’ll do well in your internships, your bosses will spread the good word around! They may refer you to other employers for a future job. Your co-workers may also want to network with you so make sure you connect with them on LinkedIn!
Experience in the classroom is very different to experience in the real world. As stated before, classes teach you the basics, internships teach you how to implement them. You’ll be working with employers and employees who have had years of experience in the field and who know the trade to its fullest potential.
Learn about yourself
Having an internship will let you acquire new skills but also improve the skills that you possess. Once you start working and get comfortable, you’ll gain confidence and be hopeful for your future career. The experiences we go through are what shapes us. Personal development is always a plus.
Possibly land a full time job
Many times (especially if you’re a senior and soon to graduate) your internship employer will want you to be an asset to the company, and hire you full time. This a great opportunity to start off your career in a comfortable place and soon push off to further your job searching.
So if you find your spring and fall semesters lacking (or have a summer off), apply for internships. You won’t regret it!

Check out our past intern testimonials:
“What I enjoyed most about my time interning at Mac + Lee was building relationships with my fellow interns and staff. Working in that setting allowed me to develop my communication skills as I got to assist Mac + Lee employees who worked remotely.” - Stephanie Rubino
“What I enjoyed most about my internship was the hands on experience and industry knowledge I was able to gain. Mac + Lee and the AH program continued my learning experience outside of the classroom and played a significant role in preparing me for my future sales career. Being in an environment of ambitious and goal-oriented women allowed me to build my confidence as a woman in the male-dominated industry of business and sales. Being able to learn from and work alongside the most amazing role models is one of the many reasons Acknowledge Her sets itself apart from the average internship.” - Hannah Hartmann
“One of the many things I liked about working with Mac + Lee was the in depth explanation of the importance of every job you did for your supervisors. You got to see how your work as an intern really affected the daily work of those around you and it made you feel important when you came into the office even though you were just an intern. Also, being able to work alongside the president of the company was something I value still to this day.” - Tom Melendez
