Two of the biggest parts of an interview is your first and last impression. In our last blog posts we covered numerous ways to nail the first, but what about your closing impression? This your opportunity to “close the sale” meaning you have one more chance to convince the interviewer why you would be the best fit for their team out of all the applicants they are interviewing.
There are various versions of “why” you should answer to convince your interviewer.
“Why should we hire you?”
“Why do you want this position?”
“Why are your unique skills the best for our company?”
“Why do you want to work here?
Answer these questions in detail and as passionate as possible. Pro tip: come prepared! Write down answers to these questions 24 hours in advance so they’re fresh in your mind. You’re trying to give the interviewer the bigger picture to who you are. Answers should be engaging. Form a connection between the position and your skills/experience.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
“So when do I start?”
Questions like that for example are too aggressive and uncomfortable. It won’t have the same effect.
Key things to leave your interviewer in awe:
Think of at least five skills or traits that best show who you are as an employee and a person.
Ask if there is anything else they would like you to provide such as more references, background information, and work samples.
Sell your interest in this position; don’t be too overbearing however bring detail. Show what you can bring to the position!
Ask for next steps. Follow ups are essential. If appropriate, ask for a decision date.
Ask for contact information. If for some reason you don’t hear back from them, you will need a phone number or email to see if you can check on a status.
Follow these steps and you’re sure to close your interview right! Be on the lookout for that acceptance call!
